plaid blanket scarf

If you follow fashion trends, you know that this season's must-have accessory is the plaid blanket scarf. I mean, it is everywhere. I can't go one day without scrolling through my Instagram feed and seeing it pop up. It's literally everywhere, guys. (Image credit: justdandy.org)

Now although my style is more timeless than trendy, I do love to indulge in a good trend every now and then. And this one was just too irresistible to pass up!

Allow me to make my case...

First, it's a scarf. I love scarves. Not only are they an effortless way to add a little jazz to an outfit, they're also really practical -- especially when you live in a place like Nebraska (helllllooo, warmth!). Second, it's plaid. Have you ever met someone who didn't like plaid? Hopefully not. But if you have, I suggest unfriending them immediately (okay, maybe not, but you get what I'm saying right?). Plaid is one of those patterns that -- when done in the right proportions -- is both universally liked and flattering. Third, it's a "blanket," which is just a fancy way of saying it's oversized aka HEAVENLY. Oversized anything makes me very happy.

Case closed.

If my fashion investigating skills are accurate, the scarf originated at Zara before making its way down the ready-to-wear ladder to places like Asos, Forever 21, Nasty Gal, and Target. As with most trends, the inventory seems infinite until it's not. It's completely sold out on all of those retailers' websites (crazy, right?). If you can't find it at your local F21 or Target, have no fear. Etsy and eBay will save the day!

I wore this look on Thanksgiving because something about this scarf just screams, "The holidays are upon us! Hooray!" (Or is that just me..?) Anyway, I built the outfit around the scarf by putting together pieces that pulled from the scarf's festive color palette (warm tones of tan and red). This pleated skirt felt like a no-brainer, especially when paired with holiday-appropriate red tights and over-the-knee dark brown boots (which created the perfect contrast, if I do say so myself). I kept the look up top simple and classic with a flowy white T-shirt and denim jacket. The crème de la crème is a stunning, yet understated necklace featuring a gold pendant and tassle.
