office chic

I am not a winter person. Despite having grown up in Nebraska, I've never really accepted winter as a legitimate season. I consider it, well, probably the closest thing to hell on earth. Sure, snow is pretty. But once you have to go out in the snow, that's when all the trouble begins. The below zero temps. The nasty, biting wind. The sleet. The ice on your windshield that never seems to permanently melt away. No. thank. you.

So after several weeks of dealing with the aforementioned torture, you can imagine how relieved I was to look at this week's forecast and see highs in the 50s -- last Friday it even got up to 63°! Now that's what I'm talking about. I took full advantage of these above average temps to shed the layers and dress as though it were spring or fall -- not the dead of winter.

This look is all about being office chic, without any stuffiness or unapproachability. First, I started with a black "base" -- the pencil skirt, sheer tights, pumps, and tote. While I could have just as easily worn a black blouse, I opted for the unexpected choice of a dark green cotton T-shirt. It's casual enough to help dress down the rest of the outfit, but formal enough so that the look is still put together and polished.

As a minimalist, I'm very purposeful about accessorizing. This is especially true when it comes to workwear. You don't want to wear anything that's distracting or dramatic. That's why I'm in love with this gold edged black druzy stone necklace from JES Design Studio. It falls right at the breast bone, so it makes a statement without being gaudy or over-the-top. The druzy stone is endlessly fascinating; it catches light from all angles, which brings out different elements of sparkle and interest. The black spinal stone accents along the left side of the gold chain add a modern touch to this otherwise rustic piece. This necklace is oh-so versatile and is definitely a must-have in anyone's jewelry box!
